Quick Start Guide


Welcome to SNC BareOS data backup, recovery and verification network platform

SNC BareOS management console access: type sudo bconsole at the shell prompt, help to see a list of commands or help command for details at the star prompt.

Default passwords: system root user - not defined, use sudo passwd to enable root user, and passwd -d root && passwd --lock root to disable root account for security. Default system user is user:bareos, postgres administrator is postgres:bareos, postgresql bareos database user is bareos:bareos, webui admin is admin:bareos, use system user credentials to login into Cockpit Web Console for system administration.

Use sudo dpkg-reconfigure bareos-database-common for database reconfiguration. Disable default user autologin, use Web console to configure users and hostname. You can restore SNC BareOS platform to factory configuration at the boot menu. Use start command to get back to this startup screen, sudo reboot for system restart and sudo poweroff shell command for switching off SNC BareOS platform.

Network Setup

SNC BareOS has eth0 network interface pre-configured as dhcp in /etc/network/interfaces.d/setup file, and networking service is enabled and running. After initial boot you can find your device IP addres at the greeting message bottom part. NetworkManager service is running, use it's CLI interface or Cockpit Web Console for configuration of other interfaces. Use ip a command to find current configuration of all network interfaces.

System Users

SNC BareOS is pre-configured with default user user:bareos autologin and root user disabled. Use device console CLI, SSH network terminal or Cockpit Web Console to add and configure other users. For safety reasons delete default user after other users are configured. Enable root user only temporarily - for installation and administration tasks, and remove it when not needed.

Available Platforms

SNC BareOS is supplied in three alternative packages: a) Fanless Intel-64 SBC network appliance to be integrated into existing LAN for data collection from network devices and backup to local or remote facilities, b) Rack-mount data storage server with SCSI/RAID SSD disk array to store backups onboard, c) Virtual Machine disk image to be run on onsite IT infrastructure virtualization platform or cloud based service provider virtualization servers.

Factory Restore

SNC BareOS device data storage contains hidden partition with system factory image, whch is used to restore initial configuration of the system in case something goes wrong. Factory recovery procedure is activated via Boot Menu Factory Restore menu selection, it may take take some time (progress of total 4GB data restoration is displayed on screen) and user intervention is not needed.
