Office Works Suite
In this chapter – LibreOffice productivity software suite, GIMP raster
graphics editor, Atril document viewer, BlueFish web document editor, Goldendict dictionary with Wikipedia integration,
LUKS locked encrypted container for document exchange.
LibreOffice productivity software suite
LibreOffice free and open-source
office productivity software suite is a project of The Document Foundation (TDF). As its native file format to save documents for all of its applications,
LibreOffice uses the OpenDocument Format for Office Applications (ODF) or OpenDocument - an international standard
developed jointly by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC). LibreOffice also supports the file formats of most other major office suites, including Microsoft
Office, through a variety of import and export filters. LibreOffice provide the following applications:
- Writer - A word processor with similar functionality and file support to Microsoft Word or WordPerfect.
It has extensive WYSIWYG word processing capabilities, but can also be used as a basic text editor. It can also
create fillable forms via PDF or the Forms tab.
- Calc - A spreadsheet program, similar to Microsoft Excel or Lotus 1-2-3. It has several unique features, including
a system, which automatically defines series of graphs, based on information available to the user.
- Impress - A presentation program resembling Microsoft PowerPoint. Impress has support for multiple file formats
including PPTX, ODP, and SXI.
- Draw - A vector graphics editor, raster graphics editor, and diagramming tool similar to Microsoft Visio, CorelDRAW,
and Adobe Photoshop. It provides connectors between shapes, which are available in a range of line styles and facilitate
building drawings such as flowcharts. It also includes features similar to desktop publishing software such as Scribus
and Microsoft Publisher, but the features are not on par with desktop publishing software. It can also act as a
PDF file editor.
- Math - An application designed for creating and editing mathematical formulae. The application uses a variant of XML
for creating formulas, as defined in the OpenDocument specification. These formulas can be incorporated into other
documents in the LibreOffice suite, such as those created by Writer or Calc, by embedding the formulas into the document.
- Base - A database management program, similar to Microsoft Access. LibreOffice Base allows databases to be created
and managed, and the generation of forms and reports of database content. Like Access, it can be used to create small
embedded databases that are stored with the document files (using Java-based HSQLDB and C++ based Firebird as its storage
engine), and for more demanding tasks it can also be used as a front-end for various database management systems,
including Access Database Engine (ACE/JET), ODBC/JDBC data sources, and MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL and Microsoft Access.
GIMP raster graphics editor
GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a free and open-source raster graphics editor used for image
manipulation (retouching) and image editing, free-form drawing, transcoding between different image file formats, and
more specialized tasks. It is not designed to be used for drawing, though some artists and creators have used it for such.
GIMP supports importing and exporting with a large number of different file formats, GIMP's native format XCF is designed
to store all information GIMP can contain about an image; XCF is named after the eXperimental Computing Facility where GIMP
was authored. GIMP has import and export support for image formats such as BMP, JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF and HEIF,
along with the file formats of several other applications such as Autodesk flic animations, Corel PaintShop Pro images,
and Adobe Photoshop documents. Other formats with read/write support include PostScript documents, X bitmap image, xwd,
and Zsoft PCX. GIMP can also read and write path information from SVG files and read/write ICO Windows icon files.
Atril Document Viewer
Atril is a simple multi-page document viewer. It can display and print PostScript (PS), Encapsulated PostScript (EPS),
DJVU, DVI, XPS and Portable Document Format (PDF) files. When supported by the document, it also allows searching for
text, copying text to the clipboard, hypertext navigation, and table-of-contents bookmarks.
BlueFish web document editor
Bluefish is a powerful editor, targeted towards programmers
and web developers, with many options to write websites, scripts and programming code. Bluefish supports many programming
and mark-up languages.
Goldendict dictionary with Wikipedia integration
GoldenDict dictionary is a feature-rich dictionary lookup program, is powered by
the Slant community and gives translations of words and phrases for different languages. It allows the use of several
popular dictionary file formats simultaneously and without conversion, including StarDict dictionaries, Babylon .BGL files,
Dict dictionary files as well as ABBYY Lingvo
source files and audio archives. In addition to that, GoldenDict supports MediaWiki-based references, which include both
Wikipedia and Wiktionary. But that's not all. Since GoldenDict is based on the WebKit toolkit it can parse and display
data from virtually any Web site, so you can use GoldenDict to look up words in many popular online references, as long
as they support URL-based queries.
Encrypted LUKS container management with zuluCrypt
zuluCrypt does hard drives encryption and it can manage PLAIN
dm-crypt volumes, LUKS encrypted volumes, TrueCrypt encrypted volumes, VeraCrypt encrypted volumes and Microsoft’s
BitLocker volumes. zuluCrypt can manage encrypted volumes that are hosted in image files, lvm, mdraid, hard drives,
usb sticks or any other block device. zuluCrypt can also encrypt stand alone files (zuluCrypt menu -> zC -> encrypt a file).
